Vertebrates

This DVD introduces the members of vertebrates group existing today, illustrated by various examples. The phyloge- netic development, which started in the primeval oceans, is shown in detail by means of homologous skeleton structures. The variations in the body’s basic structure in adaptation to the vertebrates’ respective needs, which resulted in today’s situation with vertebrates living in water, on land and in the air, are demonstrated by means of extant representatives of the class. The vertebrates group encompasses cartilage and bony fishes, amphibians, reptiles, birds and mammals. The modifications of those skeletal elements serving locomotion, from the fins of the fish to the wing span of the birds and the hands of mammals, are shown. This DVD is suitable for the topic of vertebrates for younger pupils or as a contribution to the topic of evolution illustrated by means of the development of vertebrates.

Villa Rustica

A Roman villa is fundamentally different from what we would regard as a villa in the modern sense. A Villa Rustica was a country estate with a mansion, large gardens and agricultural land. In addition to cultivating the fields, people also bred animals. This work was done by farm labourers and slaves, who mostly lived in outbuildings outside the mansion area. Thus a Roman villa was far more than just a building, it was almost a small village. Over centuries a network of Roman country estates had marked the culture of the empire north of the Alps. With the cultivation of the soil, the trade and exchange of goods, the Villa Rustica was a pillar of the Roman Empire.

Volcanos

When volcanos are mentioned in the media, this is usually in connection with devastating eruptions, which come with massive damage and a great number of victims. However, volcanos can also be quite useful – either as tourist attractions or as suppliers of valuable resources. This DVD offers an introduction to volcanism. For this purpose, the following subjects are treated in four film clips: “Structure of Volcanos” – there can be considerable structural differences among the firemountains; “Types of Eruption” – depending on the composition of the magma, explosive or effusive eruptions occur; “Moderate Activities” – in between and after larger eruptions a volcano never rests completely; “Mining Products and their Use” – the materials discharged are diverse and often useful. When choosing the examples of volcanic regions (the Eifel and South Italy), the proven didactic principle “from near to far” was observed. In view of the relative proximity of the regions, the film is suitable for the preparation of field trips, which are expressly to be encouraged.

Wadden Sea

Wadden Seas are parts of seas or landscapes on the coast respectively. Characteristic of these landscapes is that Wadden Seas are particularly exposed to the tides. There are many Wadden Seas in the temperate zones all over the world. The sea accessible by wading is usually flooded twice a day during high tide. The areas drying out at low tide are called mudflats. The habitat is susceptible to pollutions, in particular to those caused by man. We deal with the natural landscape between the Dutch Den Helder and the Ho Bay in Denmark that covers 10,000 square kilometres in total. The Wadden Sea along the North Sea: National Park, UNESCO World Heritage natural site and the largest contiguous area of mudflats in the world. The North Sea coast is wilderness on the one hand, work of man on the other hand.
