Bees, Bumblebees and Wasps
Our smallest domestic animals, the honey bees, belong to the insect order of hymenoptera just like bumblebees, wasps and ants. Many of these insects live in huge colonies with division of labour and a caste system. However, there also are less conspicuous small hymenoptera like, for instance, the mason- bee, which on its own builds complex nests for its offspring and supplies it with food. We haven’t even noticed that it has followed us into our human settlements and we don’t consider that we are taking away the habitats from these small interesting insects. This film pays attention to all these important plant pollinators, allows insights into the work of bees and wasps and shows how we can observe and protect them.

Alljährlich machen sie sich von ihren Brutplätzen auf den Weg in ihr Winterquartier und zurück. Dabei fliegen manche Arten Tausende Kilometer. Sie überqueren Gebirge, Ozeane und Kontinente. Es ist eine Reise voller Hindernisse und Gefahren. Wie finden Zugvögel punktgenau ihr Ziel? Sie haben mehrere Möglichkeiten: Mit ihrem inneren Kompass können sie das Erdmagnetfeld wahrnehmen. Wie sie das genau machen, weiß man noch nicht. Sie können sich aber auch am Stand der Sonne, der Sterne und anhand der Landschaften orientieren. Den Sonnenstand erkennen sie selbst bei bedecktem Himmel, da sie UV-Licht wahrnehmen. Durch Meeresbrandung entstehen tiefe, für uns unhörbare sogenannte Infraschalltöne. Auch danach können sich einige Vogelarten orientieren. Poland
This DVD conveys to the pupils a comprehensive picture of the European neighbour state of Poland. Topographical information on Poland is followed by an overview of its typical natural landscapes, for instance the Baltic seashore from the Pomeranian Bay to the Gulf of Gdansk, the adjacent hills of the “Baltic Ridge” und the lowlands of Silesia and Mazovia. The large lake districts, the high mountain region of the “High Tatra” and the mighty Forest Carpathians form Poland’s natu- ral landmarks. The DVD gives a striking account of Poland’s fight for sove- reignty and explains the massive economic boom as a conse- quence of the transition from a centrally planned economy to a well-functioning market economy. School Caching
A treasure hunt in nature… and with GPS devices! Geocaching has been a real trend with lovers of nature for long and now more and more schools discover that pupils can be encouraged to head out into nature and, moreover, that learning content can be communicated creatively in this way. The pupils get the coordinates for the next station only by solving a maths problem, for example, or the various answer options are linked to coordinates. In addition, geocaching promotes thinking and working in groups and can be used to improve classroom community. In this DVD, a school class demonstrates us a school caching organised by their teachers in the Swabian Alps, the development of an educational cache and how GPS works. Who determines how and what is built? Who will ensure that traffic is regulated for all? That there are traffic lights, that pedestrians have their rights? Who makes sure that enough playgrounds are built and that there are schools for the children of the community to go to? Who leads the administration of such a municipality which is needed so that everything we take for granted in everyday life works smoothly? A mayor or mayoress takes care of all these activities.
