Earthworm

It is slippery, soft and slimy, burrows in the moist soil and many just find it disgusting – the earthworm. Most of us know it when it comes to the surface in heavy rain and ends in puddles or, possibly, as fish bait; but earthworms are true natural wonders and extremely useful. Only a very small percentage of all animals are vertebrates. These animals, such as mammals, birds, reptiles, amphibians and fish, all have a vertebral column. Over 90% of our fauna are invertebrate animals.

Vertebrates

This DVD introduces the members of vertebrates group existing today, illustrated by various examples. The phyloge- netic development, which started in the primeval oceans, is shown in detail by means of homologous skeleton structures. The variations in the body’s basic structure in adaptation to the vertebrates’ respective needs, which resulted in today’s situation with vertebrates living in water, on land and in the air, are demonstrated by means of extant representatives of the class. The vertebrates group encompasses cartilage and bony fishes, amphibians, reptiles, birds and mammals. The modifications of those skeletal elements serving locomotion, from the fins of the fish to the wing span of the birds and the hands of mammals, are shown. This DVD is suitable for the topic of vertebrates for younger pupils or as a contribution to the topic of evolution illustrated by means of the development of vertebrates.

The African night is not for sleeping. A lot is going on there. The hunters are lying in ambush and the preys are on alert. Predators are mammals. Scientifically they are called carnivores. But other predatory vertebrates such as cats, jackals, hyenas and crocodiles are colloquially termed »predators«. They feed on meat but are not very selective in doing so. As they are not specialised in one type of animal but eat all vertebrates as well as carrion, they are called opportunistic feeders, which means they target the food that is easiest for them to catch, in the shortest time and with minimum energy input.

People like to celebrate – music, laughing, dancing, being sociable, giving and receiving presents. All this is part of a good celebration. Apart from private festivities such as birthdays or weddings, there are also constantly recurring feasts and holidays in the circle of the seasons. Some are celebrated only regionally, others nationwide or worldwide. It is often forgotten that originally they had a Christian background. Thanksgiving, a parish fair or church mass turned into a fun fair and eventually simply a public festival in many places. They can be used for contemplation, commemoration, for example of the life of Jesus Christ, and for common celebration with other believers in church services.

Man and Climate

The first chapter of this DVD deals with the population development over the past 3000 years and the associated dramatic effects on nature. The massive deforestation and the fast-increasing water consumption are analysed as two examples for the consumption of our resources. The dependency of the regeneration of our water supplies on climatic conditions clearly illustrates the close link between humans and the climate. But what exactly is the climate and how is it determined? This question is discussed in detail in the second chapter. A look back into the past helps us in addressing current questions. The warm High Middle Ages and the following Little Ice Age as well as plant remains, e.g. the annual rings of trees, or animal finds such as dinosaur skeletons allow us to draw conclusions regarding climatic conditions. Will we meet the same fate as the dinosaurs? In the fourth chapter, we visit the climate data processing centre at the MPI. Significant climate changes are predicted in model calculations for the next 100 years. This leads to further important questions: Do we need to act? If yes, when and on what scale? Especially with this last chapter, the pupils are encouraged to recognise their own responsibility in order to shape the future of all of us.
