Battle of the Nations
From 16th to 19th October 1813 the allies Austria, Prussia, Russia and Sweden inflicted the decisive defeat on the French army, thus breaking the supremacy of Napoleon over Europe. In the first mass combat in modern times more than half a million soldiers from all parts of Europe fought for the political future and the territorial division of the continent. The Battle of the Nations went down in history as the biggest and bloodiest battle until the First World War. The film tells the story of this crushing blow to Napoleon. With exciting footage, filmed during the historical re-enactment of the Battle on the occasion of its 200th anniversary, and numerous interviews history is brought to life again. Together with the extensive teaching material in the data section the DVD is perfectly suited for use in the classroom.

Halogens
The compounds of halogens are - with the exception of astatine - widespread, can be encountered in nature and are versatile substances. This fact is taken up on this DVD in order to teach the students the chemistry of the halogens by illustrating their special qualities and explaining the correlation of their structure with their chemical properties. In the first part, an overview of the element group of halogens lays emphasis on the common as well as on the distinguishing characteristics of fluorine, chlorine, bromine and iodine. In a second part, the specific properties of bromine and iodine are presented. This topic is linked to the students‘ everyday experience on the one hand (bromine as a catalyst for reactolite sunglasses, iodine as an agent in medicine, etc.) on the one hand. As a rule, they are of a kind that can only be realized with difficulty, or high expenditure in the chemistry classroom. With the help of these experiments, students are introduced to the chemistry of the halogens in a way that enables them to draw conclusions on the basis of their observations.

Internet Addiction
The film consists of two parts. The first part is the 15-minute short film “In the Net”. It describes the problem of excessive Internet use in a humorous way, in particular the risk of losing touch with reality when chatting. The second part illustrates with three real persons how Internet addiction can develop and the problems encountered by those who are afflicted. The authentic statements are commented by an experienced therapist. For many pupils, the issues addressed here are related to their everyday lives. What is a “sensible” use of the Internet, where does pathological addiction start? In contrast to addiction to alcohol, nicotine or drugs, the public seems to be largely ignorant of the problem of this addiction, which is not related to any substance abuse. The film provides material for discussion in the classroom (crossdisciplinary) and can be used as a basis for the formulation of prevention strategies.

Human Dignity
This is Albertine. She is seven years old. Three years ago, she lost her mother and has lived with her grandmother ever since, her father has left them. Every noon she comes to have lunch in the ward. The girl seems to feel her strength ebbing away and has decided not to talk anymore. The children at this stage believe that the grown-ups can prevent death but see that they're not doing so. Thus, they seal themselves off and retreat into their own world. Birds
This DVD from the Vertebrates series comprehensively introduces birds by means of various examples of indigenous, tropical and polar bird species. Among other things, it provides information on typical bird characteristics such as skeleton and bone structure, structure and function of the beak and feathers as well as the principle of light-weightness. Impressive close-ups of prepared bird bones as well as of a feather’s vane serve to illustrate these aspects.
