Birds

This DVD from the Vertebrates series comprehensively introduces birds by means of various examples of indigenous, tropical and polar bird species. Among other things, it provides information on typical bird characteristics such as skeleton and bone structure, structure and function of the beak and feathers as well as the principle of light-weightness. Impressive close-ups of prepared bird bones as well as of a feather’s vane serve to illustrate these aspects. The adaptability of birds to the environments of air, land and water as well as to different kinds of food are shown by means of the examples of typical representatives of the species such as eagle and falcon, emu, duck, moorhen and kingfisher. Here, the pupils also learn about the relation between diet and shape of beak. The reproduction and breeding of birds is illustrated with impressive outdoor pictures of courtship and nest-building with different bird species, the hatching of a chick, the raising of grey herons up to the squabs’ first attempts at flying. Furthermore, the menu includes additional pictures as well as a tabular list of the different breeding times of altricial and precocial birds. Thus, this DVD offers flexibility and variety in the classroom and is especially suited for interactive learning.

Microcosm

We perceive the world we live in with our sense organs. However, perception with our senses represents only a limited part of the cosmos we live in. There is a world eluding the perception of our eyes. It exists hidden away for its cosmos is extremely small. The world of microcosm. This world is full of fascination and surprises. Up to the 1930s a deeper penetration into the microcosm was impossible. Only the invention of a new technology enabled us to render still smaller details of the microcosm visible to the human eye. A magnification of up to a thousandth millimetre has become possible. This film provides a profound insight into the microcosm. Rare pictures of mites, water bears and other creatures, made visible by means of various microscopes make the film an extraordinary experience. In addition, the DVD includes bonus material explaining the functions of the different microscopes with the help of diagrams. Due to the combination of the subjects of microcosm and microscopes, this DVD is perfectly suited for biology classes as well as physics lessons.

Coffee

Coffee has become the second most important commodity on the world market after crude oil, and it enjoys tremendous popularity around the globe. Allegedly, it happened by chance that the stimulating effect of the cherry-like fruit was discovered in the Ethiopian province of Kaffa. The deep brown, aromatic drink embarked on a global journey of success. From the middle of the 17th century, it also became widespread in Europe, even though it was a treat that was initially reserved for the prosperous. Today, however, it is a part of everyday life for many people. The DVD starts with the history of the spreading of coffee cultivation and continues to describe in detail the biological characteristics of the coffee shrub. Another chapter outlines the conditions for growth and introduces the most important coffee-producing regions. The long, laborious journey from the harvest of the ripe coffee cherry to the prepared cup is illustrated. The economically weakest link in this chain are the coffee farmers. There are several organisations acting on a worldwide scale that try to realise adequate prices for the coffee farmers and promote incentives for development by means of fair trade.s is described.

Migration

Migration and integration are central topics of future relevance in politics as well as in the public mind. Germany has long been a country of immigration. This can constantly be seen in everyday life: in the playground, in the underground, in the office or in the schoolyard. At school, in particular, this immigration society is being lived and experienced every day. Here, the groundwork for the future of our society is also being laid. In order to be able to explore the topic first-hand we have visited a school in Nuremberg with a large amount of pupils having a migration background. In project groups, the pupils of the 11th form of the Pirckheimer Gymnasium have already been investigating in depth the topics of migration and integration. Their assessments of the subject area were recorded and integrated into the overall context. The DVD is divided into substantial chapters on forms, causes and consequences of migration, on the history of migration in Germany, on political and legal framework conditions and on integration as a challenge and an opportunity. In the accompanying material, tasks providing further interest and insight are available that have been adapted to the content of the film.
