The Rhine – a Natural Area
At 1,230 km the Rhine is the second longest river in Western Europe. From its source in the canton of Graubünden in the Swiss Alps, it travels through Austria, Germany and empties into the North Sea in the Netherlands. The most important tributaries of the Rhine are the rivers Meuse, Main, Moselle and Neckar. The Rhine is one of the busiest and most important waterways in the world.

Poland
This DVD conveys to the pupils a comprehensive picture of the European neighbour state of Poland. Topographical information on Poland is followed by an overview of its typical natural landscapes, for instance the Baltic seashore from the Pomeranian Bay to the Gulf of Gdansk, the adjacent hills of the “Baltic Ridge” und the lowlands of Silesia and Mazovia. The large lake districts, the high mountain region of the “High Tatra” and the mighty Forest Carpathians form Poland’s natu- ral landmarks. The DVD gives a striking account of Poland’s fight for sove- reignty and explains the massive economic boom as a conse- quence of the transition from a centrally planned economy to a well-functioning market economy. A visit to the capital of Warsaw shows, among other things, the Old Town, which is a UNESCO World Heritage Site, but also the modern part of the city around the Palace of Culture and Science. The pupils also get to know Poland as a country of science and culture, where modern research and traditional customs peacefully coexist.This DVD shows the diversity and unique- ness of the EU member state of Poland and helps pupils to learn more about their European homeland.

The European Parliament
The European Union is a union consisting of 27 European states. Currently its population comprises about 500 million inhabitants. 17 of these states have a common currency. Its aim is a pan-European area of freedom, security and justice. The European Parliament is elected every five years by the EU citizens and is thus the only directly elected body. The European Parliament shares its legislative function with the Council of the European Union, wherein the governments of the individual member states are represented, and the European Commission, which represents the interests of the EU as a whole. These three institutions together develop the political strategies and legislative provisions which are applied throughout the EU. The European Parliament ensures uniform pan-European regulations. Citizens profit from them for example for data protection, for mobile tariffs, for working and living in Europe and much more besides! Together with the extensive accompanying material the DVD is ideally suited for use in the classroom.

In simple terms that are easily understandable to primary school pupils, the film outlines the significance of water for the lives of humans, animals and plants.
