The Beaver
Natural river and lake areas are becoming increasingly rare. With expensive measures to restore them to their natural state, efforts are being made to recreate them. Here, an animal may be helpful: the beaver. After it was exterminated in Germany in the 19th century, today about 15 000 specimens live here again thanks to the reintroduction of the beaver during the 1960s. Many people, however, have never caught sight of this shy nocturnal rodent, yet. The DVD first describes the beaver (in particular its adaptation to life in water) and zoologically classifies it. Then the beaver family and their social behaviour and habitat are introduced. The beaver constructions (beaver dam and beaver lodge) are illustrated as well as its territory and its purely vegetarian diet. Subsequently, both its extermination and its reintroduction as well as present-day problems are looked into. But primarily the film shows the beaver to be a valuable, natural architect of landscapes.

Christian Feasts
People like to celebrate – music, laughing, dancing, being sociable, giving and receiving presents. All this is part of a good celebration. Apart from private festivities such as birthdays or weddings, there are also constantly recurring feasts and holidays in the circle of the seasons. Some are celebrated only regionally, others nationwide or worldwide. It is often forgotten that originally they had a Christian background. Thanksgiving, a parish fair or church mass turned into a fun fair and eventually simply a public festival in many places. Ascension Day, Whitsun or Easter are mostly wonderful occasions for just relaxing and long weekend getaways. But to Christians they have yet another, deeper meaning. They can be used for contemplation, commemoration, for example of the life of Jesus Christ, and for common celebration with other believers in church services.

Topographical in- formation on Slovakia is followed by an overview of its typical natural landscapes, for instance, the alpine mountain ranges of the Carpathians, the Slovakian Ore Mountains with their rich ore deposits, the Slovak lowlands of the Little and Great Hungarian Plains, the Danube Valley and the Váh Valley and its many lakes and reservoirs. The DVD explains the economic upswing of recent years and introduces successful branches of industry with the example of the Volkswagen plant in Bratislava. A visit to the capital Bratislava shows, among other things, the world-renowned “New Bridge”, the monumental national theatre and the Castle of Bratislava, which is perpetuated in the coat of arms of the city.This DVD shows the diversity and uniqueness of the EU member state of Slovakia and helps pupils to learn more about their European homeland.

Baden-Wuerttemberg – The Federal States Baden-Wuerttemberg, the third largest federal state, is located in the southwest of Germany. Its landscape structure is highly diverse and offers such different nature areas as the Odenwald, the Spessart, the Upper Rhine Plain, the Black Forest and the Swabian Jura. Baden-Wuerttemberg, formerly divided into Baden and Wuerttemberg, has a long and turbulent history, which can be traced far back into the past. The federal state itself is not very old, it is the youngest federal state in Germany. Baden-Wuerttemberg counts among the economically strongest and most competitive regions of Europe. It is the exporting country number one among the federal states and is considered the most innovative region of the EU as far as high technology, research and development are concerned. Of particular interest for tourism are Baden-Wuerttemberg traditions, among them the typical Black Forest houses and the costumes with their ”Bollenhut“ hats. Together with the extensive additional material the DVD is ideally suited for use in the classroom.
